3D Documentation of Gwarko Overpass Using LiXel Kity K1 for Infrastructure Asset Management
3D Documentation of Gwarko Overpass Using LiXel Kity K1 for Infrastructure Asset Management
The Gwarko Overpass, a major grade-separated intersection along the Koteshwor–Satdobato–Kalanki section of the Kathmandu Ring Road, represents critical infrastructure for managing traffic flow in the Kathmandu Valley. To support engineering documentation and digital asset management, a comprehensive 3D scanning survey was conducted using the LiXel Kity K1 handheld SLAM-based LiDAR scanner, aiming to create an accurate digital twin for future maintenance planning and visualization within GIS and BIM systems.
The Gwarko Overpass spans approximately 576.2 meters in total length, featuring a 36.2m bridge span and approach ramps of 320m (Lagankhel side) and 185m (Satdobato side). The structure accommodates four lanes with a 16.4m carriageway width and maintains a 6m vertical clearance for underpass traffic. The complex site includes multiple intersecting access roads, sidewalks, streetlights, and drainage systems, presenting an ideal test case for advanced LiDAR documentation.
The scanning was executed during off-peak hours to minimize traffic interference. Using the LiXel Kity K1, multiple overlapping passes were conducted across both ramps, the underpass, and bridge deck areas. The LiXel GO app enabled real-time visualization for quality verification. The comprehensive survey, completed in approximately 90 minutes, generated ~52 GB of raw data covering the 0.6 km corridor. Data processing included noise removal, RGB color mapping, SLAM-based registration, and georeferencing using ground control points.
This project successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of handheld LiDAR technology for complex infrastructure documentation. Despite challenges such as traffic movement, reflective surfaces, and variable lighting conditions, the strategic scanning approach delivered consistent, high-quality results. The resulting digital twin serves as a baseline for maintenance planning, structural analysis, and integration into modern asset management systems, advancing Nepal's infrastructure towards data-driven management practices.
